american-red-crossEvery eight minutes someone is saved by the Red Cross. It doesn’t matter if you donate money, blood, or just volunteer – you’re making a difference for the Earth and making it a more beautiful place for everyone to live. Each year, March is recognized as Red Cross month, so make sure to send a generous thank you to all that help with this organization.

Emergency Dentistry – What is it?

Dental trauma is an injury occurring to the hard and/or soft tissues of the oral cavity and face. This includes the teeth and all surrounding tissues including; the periodontium, tongue, lips, jaw bone, gums, and cheeks. It is more apparent with children between the ages of eight to twelve years, but it can definitely still happen to anyone of any age – especially in New York City. The prognosis of the injury will continue to get worse the longer it is waited out or ignored.

There are a multitude of possibilities that you could go to a New York dentist for a dental emergency. Whether it’s a cracked or broken tooth, severely bitten or burned tongue, or a deformity due to a vehicular accident. It might not be serious enough to send you to a hospital, and not all dental emergencies involve severe pain, but they can possibly lead to it in the future.

What are some of the common causes of dental emergencies?

  • Cracked and broken teeth, as well as bitten or burned tongue injuries, can be the result of not wearing a mouth guard while participating in sports or recreational activities
  • Chewing on hard objects such as ice, popcorn kernels, hard candy, trying to open objects with your teeth
  • Wear and tear due to piercings
  • Drinking or eating something at a significantly increased temperature
  • Trauma such as physical abuse, falls, assaults, and collisions

What Symptoms Should I Look For?

woman at the dentistYou do NOT need to be experiencing any sort of pain to have a New York dental emergency. But if you are, that’s probably a good indication that you need medical assistance. Severe oral burns, bites, breaks, and dislodgement can be characterized by a puffy lip, bleeding (although not necessary), discomfort, pain, toothache, swelling, severe sensitivity, redness, and limited mobility.

How Can I Prevent Oral Pain From Happening?

  • To protect yourself against a mouth injury occurring during a sport, you can wear a mouth guard, which you can mold to fit more comfortably, or a protective mask.
  • NEVER try to open something using your mouth, use scissors.
  • Do not grind or clench your teeth often. If you do this in your sleep, talk to your dentist about getting a protective night guard or retainer.
  • Do not chew on hard objects like popcorn kernels, pens and pencils, ice, and hard candies.
  • Avoid getting hit in the mouth, or better, fights in general.
  • Wear your seatbelt and drive carefully to avoid tooth trauma caused by vehicular collisions.
  • Feel the heat of a liquid or food before you put it up to your mouth.
  • Take good care of your teeth, the wearing down of enamel can weaken your teeth and make them more susceptible to cracking and breaking.

How is dental trauma treated in our NYC Dental Office?

After a thorough examination, which may include x-rays, the treatment of trauma caused to the teeth may include tooth extraction, pain medication, antibiotics, cold compress, stitches, cosmetic repair done by another dentist, a nerve block, protective dentin covering, tooth preimplantation, and others depending on the person and severity. Also depending on the person and severity, you may be advised to visit your 212-Smiling dentist on a regular basis for an extended period of time. Never try and treat a dental emergency by yourself. Unnoticeable wounds can occur to neighboring teeth and tissue that can only be detected with a professional dental examination.
